Play Therapy

Children often struggle to talk about what bothers them. They have not yet developed the vocabulary or critical thinking skills necessary to express their concerns. Research shows that our brains develop and connect from the bottom up. We start with body movement and sensory experiences, allowing children to naturally progress to complex thinking, emotional awareness, and mature communication. Play therapy is a counseling approach that enables children to share their thoughts and feelings through toys, games, and art. Counselors can use play to engage with the child regarding their life experiences and help them explore alternative behaviors and attitudes. Through play, therapists can assist children in learning adaptive behaviors when faced with social or emotional challenges.

Play therapy can promote cognitive development while offering insights and resolutions to internal conflicts.

My approach to Play Therapy is to:

  • Take more responsibility for their behaviors and develop successful strategies for self regulation.

  • Promote problem-solving skills.

  • Foster respect and acceptance of self and others.

  • Learn to experience and express emotions.

  • Cultivate empathy and respect for the thoughts and feelings of others.

  • Acquire new social and relational skills.

  • Boost self-esteem.

  • Reduces anxiety.

Play Therapy can be used to treat:

Anxiety

ADD/ADHD

Anger Management

Divorce and Trauma

Behavior Issues

Depression

Grief and Loss

Perfectionism and OCD

School and Social Issues

What to Expect...

  • An initial session is held with the caregivers to gather a complete history of the child.

  • Clinical assessment of the child is conducted.

  • Once the assessment is finished, a consultation with the caregivers is provided to review the best treatment options and goals.

  • Ongoing sessions will involve the child only. Family and caregiver sessions are available when appropriate for treatment.

Counseling can help your child process emotions that lead to disruptive behaviors.
